Textual Film Openings Analysis: World War Z

Mad Max: Fury Road
World War Z

World War Z

* (from 0:30 onwards)

The clip starts out with a match-on-action shot of the main character getting out of a vehicle - it is apparent he is the main character as he gets the most screen time and the camera is focused on him.

A few long shots and bird's-eye shots are used to show the audience the unusual amount of traffic in this area. This induces a sense of wariness amongst the characters and therefore the audience.

The colouring used throughout this scene is primarily cool-toned and low in saturation to introduce a gritty, realistic atmosphere to the viewer. This is often utilised in the post-apocalyptic genre to engage the audience by making a fictional situation seem as realistic as possible. However, soon after an explosion is seen in the distance paired with an disturbingly calm soundtrack so as to focus on the sounds of the frightened civilians and police sirens instead; this blend of the realistic and unusual is intriguing enough to the viewer.

Here an over-the-shoulder shot is used from within the established setting i.e. the vehicle to see a policeman from inside it which makes the main characters more relatable as the use of this shot makes the audience feel as if they are in the car with them.

The sudden use of a loud, harsh soundtrack is used as an ambulance runs over the aforementioned policeman in comparison to the low, calm soundtrack employed earlier has an unsettling effect over the viewer. This effect is further amplified with the juxtaposition of an ambulance - often associated with nobility and saving lives - hurting the life of someone therefore engaging the viewer's sympathy.

From this point onwards the scene is increasingly fast-paced due to the sudden and swift tempo of the background music as well as the fast cuts and quick camera movements applied, conveying a sense of urgency which was foreshadowed by the symbolic ambulance truck.

The scene cuts to a few quick shots of the main characters' reactions which helps the audience relate more to the characters and possibly inspire similar reactions in them.

The main characters are involved in a brisk race to a safe zone although the destination is not explicitly stated.

Another implicit element is the survivalist theme conveyed in this scene which is central in any movie in the post-apocalyptic genre. This is magnified in the next shot where the main characters' car collides with another ambulance as shown above; this subtly establishes the post-apocalyptic theme which often involves a degree of anarchy and distrust of authority leading to the characters fending for themselves, as shown below.
